Affirmative action measures and electoral candidates’ positioning in Zambia

ABSTRACT While the increase of women in elected office has received much scholarly attention, less attention been paid to dynamics resisting gender quotas countries that fail adopt such measures despite regional and international pressure. We develop a context-sensitive typology affirmative action includes funding incentives explore determinants electoral candidates’ positioning context Zambia. Using sequential mixed-methods approach unique data, we examine how candidates different gender, party affiliation, level success position themselves when asked choose between options. Intriguingly, allegiance – whether candidate is affiliated with current or former government are more important than gender. This finding relevant for debate on feminist democratic representation by showing likely have their radical views muted getting into position.
